Classmates Bogdan "Bodek" Zakrzewski and Grzegorz "Wiechu" Miszuk formed the band in 1984 – bassist Marek "Zaku" Zak later joined them. This formation started as a cover band, formerly known as Bloody Prince. Pawel Kasiarz was incorporated the same year. They went from a heavy metal sound to one thrash-death in a short time, then introducing new drummer Norbert "Johny" Rozanski. The band changed their name to Necrophobic at first, then Merciless Death to reflect the rougher attitude and sound.
In 1987 they recorded the debut demo Eternal Condemnation with the collaboration of Wojciech Rybak and soon gained popularity among underground metal fans. The group appeared at several festivals in their home country the following year like Thrash Camp, Sthrashydlo, Shark Attack, Jarocin, winning the band contest to play at Metalmania ’88, yet they were dropped from the bill due to censorship from Katowice authorities for their satanic imagery. In spring 1988, Johny Rozanski left the band due to personal problems, his drum duties were taken by lead vocalist Wiechu himself temporarily.
Metal Mind Productions invited the group in the spring of 1989 to take part in the band contest to play at the new Metalmania edition but Miszuk's military engagement made it impossible, while Kasiarz and Zakrzewski emigrated to Germany and later the USA.
Wiechu moved to Szczecin in the late-80’s after finishing military service, auditioning for Egzekuthor, playing with them along with his bandmate Zaku until late-1991. Miszuk ended-up taking both vocal and drum duties again after Robert "Misiek" Szymanski's resignation.
Following the dissolution of Egzekuthor, Merciless Death was reactivated by both remaining members, introducing new guitar players Mariusz "Zdrodo" Zdrodowski and Jaroslaw "Figas" Figaszewski, though initially intended to be a side-project, embracing a different music style – a cross between progressive, heavy and thrash metal. In spring 1992, they entered the studio to record the second demo entitled Holocaust, with the collaboration of Marek Szukalo, which was released through Carnage Records. They went on tour in their home country and got down to work on new material for a full length-record – Sick Sanctities was published the next year.
Wiechu quit the band in summer 1993, and was replaced by vocalist Norbert Sobolewski and drummer Jaroslaw Marcinkowski. This formation did more shows in Poland until Sobolewski left due to musical differences. After going through more line-up changes, they broke-up in 1994.
They re-united for the third time in 2009 without Kasiarz and Zakrzewski; Zaku played in 2 songs but soon decided to leave. Guest bassist Tomasz "Skaya" Skuza, guitarists Michael Schmidt and Mateusz "Matek" Lazar joined Zdrodo and Wiechu in the studio. 10 New songs were recorded, plus Holy Death’s homonym track cover.
