IN THE NURSERY's musical history covers the past 25 years and has constantly expressed their desire for progress and experimentation. The latest musical technology is augmented by classical arrangements and orchestral percussion evoking a timeless quality.
ITN formed in 1981, releasing their debut mini-album, When Cherished Dreams Come True in 1983, and the 12" Sonority and various contributions to compilations over the next two years. These formative years saw ITN developing their unique sound based around a backbone of percussion and military snare drum, which next produced the 12" Temper, their first recording for the new Sweatbox label. Personnel changes ensued and ITN were stripped down to the writing nucleus of twin brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone. 1986 saw the release of their first full album, TWINS, which hinted at the distinctive classical influences that were being taken on board.
In 1987 ITN were augmented by military drummer/percussionist Q and multi-lingual vocalist Dolores Marguerite C, for the 12" Trinity and album Stormhorse. Intended as a soundtrack to an imaginary film, the album stands as a seminal work of combined technological and instrumental arrangement. Interspersed with European touring, ITN strove further with their final Sweatbox recordings, the 12" Compulsion and album Koda. 1989 saw the group move to Third Mind Records and the release of L'Esprit, one of their most sophisticated and refined classical works. Sense (1991) and Duality (1992) followed, two works which again highlighted the 'filmic' nature of their music - an aspect utilised to great effect in An Ambush of Ghosts (1993), their first feature film soundtrack. Directed by Everett Lewis, the film is an intense psychological drama starring Genevieve Bujold and Stephen Dorff.
Anatomy of a Poet (1994), was ITN's last album for Roadrunner and Third Mind Records. It represented a consolidation of their unique sound but with the addition of new influences. The voice of author Colin Wilson reciting selections of his favourite 'Romantic' poetry was incorporated in a number of tracks which helped reinforce the conceptual link of the album's main themes examining the self-destructive nature of creative artists. Lush string arrangements entwine the album from beginning to end.
ITN's collaborations with other artists have broadened the spectrum of their own distinct style. Under the alias of 'Les Jumeaux' they contributed the initial keyboard arrangements to Sabres Of Paradise and Andrew Weatherall's 'Smokebelch' single of 1993 and teamed up with producer John Crossley (Kicking Back and Guerrilla) to create various remixes of their single Hallucinations?. ITN's re-make of the Sabres Of Paradise track 'Haunted Dancehall' was featured on the compilation 'Cafe Del Mar - Volumen Dos'.
Scatter, their 1995 retrospective CD compilation (and first new release on their ITN Corporation label), is an essential document of the groups distinctive career, charting their progression and evocative soundtrack work. The effective nature of ITN's soundtrack work has also been picked up on by the film world when Warner Brothers chose the track White Robe to advertise and promote 'Interview With The Vampire'. Hallucinations? was featured in 'Streetfighter II' (Sony), the Hollywood feature 'A Woman Undone' and Claudia Schiffer's workout video. ITN's music has also been featured in the 'Aviator' trailer and Clint Eastwood's new movie 'Gran Torino'.
Building upon the autonomy and creative freedom of running their own ITN Corporation label, In The Nursery entered 1996 with the release of Feathercuta debut release under the alias Les Jumeaux. The album was enthusiastically received (the track Miracle Road has been featured on countless compilations including Cafe Del Mar 4) and a follow up Cobalt, featuring remixes and new tracks, was released May '97.
ITN's 10th studio album Deco was a stunning 'organic' collection of songs inspired by the Art Deco Movement, once again featuring the evocative voice of Dolores Marguerite C. Tracks have subsequently been licensed by Warner Bros. for use in the hit US TV series La Femme Nikita.
ITN's unique filmic approach has seen them commissioned to provide new soundtrack scores (the Optical Music Series) for silent classics The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 1996, Asphalt 1997, Man with a Movie Camera 1999, HindleWakes 2000, A Page of Madness 2004, Electric Edwardians 2005 and The Passion of Joan of Arc 2008.
The scores have been accompanied by live performance screenings at independent cinemas and film festivals worldwide.
LINGUA (May 98) - one of ITN Corporations' most successful releases. The album examines language - its development, diverse phonetic styles along with our understanding and use of words. A whole selection of worldwide vocal contributions including Japanese, native Mexican, Friulano (an ancient Italian dialect), Yugoslavian, French and Hispanic are interwoven with the universal language of ITN's music.
GROUNDLOOP (January 2000) - features 8 new tracks from the Humberstone brothers, taking their unique filmic music to the next level; moments of intense orchestral percussion, passages of unnerving beauty and vocals courtesy of linguist Dolores Marguerite C.
The album ENGEL features stunning new recordings of their classic tracks 'Blue Religion' and 'To The Faithful'. Inspired by and specially created for a multi-media game project 'Engel' is a highly atmospheric album intended to both enhance and work independently to the storytelling.
PRAXIS (2003) - 10 tracks created through friction, collision, interaction and reflection.
ERA (2007) - ITN's last studio album, explores the themes of architecture, urban decay and regeneration.
Along with contributions from Dolores Marguerite C and drummer David Elektrik, the album also features collaborations with guest vocalist Sarah Jay Hawley, best known for her work with Massive Attack.
BLIND SOUND (2011) The Legacy shows up in this album more intervenient that in other the twis are here to roll over.
A majestic band with almost an album per year, Amazing!!!
