Because of this the band that would in a couple years change its name to Zemial does not share its style with the famoust Greek Black Metal scene first defined by Rotting Christ in 1993. Zemial instead used for the inspiration the unholy trio of Bathory, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost.
After the initial stage of changing line-ups, playing shows and recording first rehearsals and ultimately changing the name, by 1991 the band consisted of Vorskaath on guitars and vocals, Mentor (who would later found Kawir) on bass and Necrosauron (of Rotting Christ) on drums. The first promo tapes have created a reputation for the band in underground and the natural next step was going to be an official release. And the very next year in 1992 "Sleeping Under Tartarus" EP is recorded in Athens MOLON LAVE Studios (later Storm Studios). French label Osmose Productions showed interest in printing and distributing it, but Vorskaath refused signing off the rights for unlimited pressing. The EP is instead released in limited numbers through the USA Gothic Records/Torched Records and attracts attention to the band on the worldwide scale making it the first Greek Black Metal band with a record deal outside Greece. Vorskaath proceeded to ignore all the further popositions from Osmose Productions and parted ways with the rest of the members. The year 1993 was spent writing material what would in future become "Nykta" and "For the Glory of UR" releases. During that time Vorskaath is joined by Magus Wampyr Daoloth of Necromantia but the cooperation one again did not last long. In 1994 Vorskaath and his brother the Dark One (of Agatus) relocate to Australia and Vorskaath has to restart the band from scratch. "Sleeping Under Tartarus" is re-released through Gothic Records and this time it is sold worldwide though it still sells bess in the USA. The whole printing is completely sold out through pre-orders. In 1995 Zemial record "For the Glory of UR". Gothic Records has by then ceased to exist, and Vorskaath discusses distributing the new EP through his former bandmate Daoloth's newly founded label. 1996 - Hypervorea Records (now Black Lotus) and Sub-Terra Records release "For the Glory of UR" but fail to promote, distribute and circulate the album sufficiently and fail to meet their contractual obligations. The contract is thus void and Vorskaath is beginning to receive offers from other labels. In the early 1997 Zemial participate on a "Tribute to Bathory" with a cover for 'Armageddon'. The unofficial bootleg with material from Zemial, Thou Shalt Suffer and Mayhem is beginning to circulate. The raw recordings of "Necrolatry" are recorded and circulated widely as a demo. Toward the end of 1997, Zemial recorded three tracks for a 7" single that remains unreleased to this day. In 1998 Zemial travel to Berlin and record their next release: "Breath of the Pestilence" with famous Thrash Metal producer Harris Johns (Sodom, Kreator, Helloween). Due to technical problems, the recording also remains unreleased. In 1999 Germal label Iron Pegasus Records signs the band and re-releases the "For the Glory of UR" on vinyl and cd with bonus tracks and different artwork. Thus the debut album is finally being distributed in Europe. 2000 - "Necrolatry" is released on limited edition vinyl format and is sold out within two months. 2001 - First European tour with German band Desaster from the same label. 2002 - Negotiations for their 2 upcoming releases. Most of the year is spent on different musical projects - Alpha Centauri and The Watcher. 2003 - Zemial enter the Vault studio and record "Face of the Conqueror". The material is composed/improvised during the recording sessions with no prior rehearsing. The band goes on an another tour across Europe to promote the new release. 2004 - The death of Quorthon (Bathory) on June 7, 2004, who was the primary influence and inspiration on Vorskaath, prompted the composition of a new Zemial album that would be dedicated to the memory of the departed. 2005 - Zemial begin rehearsals and enter the Vault studios once again to record "In Monumentum" - their tribute to Thomas Forsberg (Quorthon). With this album Vorskaath will cut ties to Iron Pegasus Records and release the material via his own newly founded label NYX. 2006 - "In Monumentum" is released in March and a new tour is mainly focused on Vorskaath's homeland, Greece, but also included shows in Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium and other European countries. The next few years are spent back in Greece and only see two small Zemial releases: "I Am the Dark" single in 2009 and "Dusk" single in 2011. But in 2013 Zemial release possibly their most technical and ambitious album "Nykta" consisting of old polished and new material alike. The move from proto-Black Metal and toward Progressive Metal and even Progressive Rock becomes apparent. In 2016 "The Repairer of Reputations" EP is released marking almost a complete shift toward Progressive Rock/Metal. In 2022 "To Slay with Silent Dagger" EP follows suit and marks the band's partial return to Black/Thrash Metal. | |
