(vocal) under the name BEDEVIL, but a few weeks later they were joined by Miguel ''The Blind'' (bass) and Rustam (keys) who had also proposed to change the name to Rakoth - a character in the books of Nick Perumov. Rakoth is a demigod, one of the "true mages" that has refused to obey the "Young Gods" and instead has dethroned them thus becoming "The New God". The musicians liked Rakoth's rebellious spirit. Some of the band's songs are also inspired by Nick Perumov's books.
In December of 1996 the band has finished forming their line-up with Black joining as a vocalist and replacing Miguel by Den on bass. The first song of the new line-up was 'Return of the Nameless' - all the music was written by Rustam (keys) и Ilya (guitar) with lyrics by Rustam. Now they have had their signature sound - the combination of clean vocals of Black the new vocalist and Rustam's keys. The song has gotten known outside of Obninsk long before the band's first show. In February of 1997 Rakoth has played their first show sharing the stage with a Techno-Death band Dissenter as a part of ''Rock against chemical dependence'' fest. The concert went well and the public even appeared to recognize the band even despite them never releasing any records. Rakoth have performed 'Return of the Nameless' as well as their earlier songs: 'Unholy Temple', 'One Step Beyond' (which would later be radically transformed into 'Beyond'), 'Dying Realm' a cover of 'Nagellstev' by Storm. In March of 1997 the band was going through internal struggle. Rustam was thinking of leaving. Leshy and F. have stated that they wanted to leave the band as well. The band was no more. F., Leshy and Ilya have formed a Black Metal band GORBUG. In May of 1997 Rustam has decided to form a new band with Black and Den. They were thinking of playing Doom Metal mixing it with various different genres. At the same time the band DISSENTER split up and the guitarist/vocalist Dy, willing to play more varied kind of music, joins them on guitar. Leshy has proposed to help them as a drummer. The unnamed band is rehearsing in Rustam's garage. June 1997, the band is choosing a name. MEPHISTO, UNBORN, TEARS, DOWNFALL and IN THIS ROOM are all discarded. Then Dy proposes to continue using the name Rakoth again given that the band under this name does not exist anymore and it was proposed by Rustam in the first place. The rest agree. July 1997 - Leshy is officially joining Rakoth as a drummer. The first demo called 'Tales of the Worlds Unreal' is recorded in the same garage. September of 1997 - the band's first solo performance. Just like the previous one, the band is welcomed warmly. October of 1997 - the drummer Leshy suddenly leaves the band. Along with F. (now Tuur) and Ilya (now Vuulko) who have left earlier they are now playing True Pagan Metal as Темнозорь. Rakoth would use drum-machine from this point on. February of 1998 - first review of the 'Dark Ages Chronicle' demo is published in VAE SOLIS web-zine. It is positive, as well as all the following ones! March of 1998 - a Latvian label is beginning to distribute 'Dark Ages Chronicle'. April 1998 - Rustam starts UMBRAL PRESENCE to play music that would be more agressive than Rakoth. June 1998 - one moreLatvian label , Beverina Productions, is beginning to distribute 'Dark Ages Chronicle'. 18th of August, 1998 - the band is at the 'Signal Studios' starting the recording of a new album exactly one year after the previous one. One week later the LP 'Superstatic Equilibrium' is ready. Rustam is recording an UMBRAL PRESENCE demo named 'et germinet Chaos'. Both records are sold to Elven Witchcraft. November of 1998 - 'Superstatic Equilibrium' and 'et germinet Chaos' are being officially distributed by Elven Witchcraft. April of 1999 - 'code666' voice their interest in the band. Rustam is sending 'Superstatic Equilibrium' to Italy and by June 1999 'code666' propose to sign a contract. In August the contract is signed. October 1999 - the band is beginning recording 'Planeshift' at the 'CDM Studio' in Moscow. January of 2000 - 'code666' sign an agreement with 'Imperial Records' and license 'Planeshift' to be published in USA. American version is released in March. October 2000 - a contract with 'Irond Ltd.' - the album will be available to Russian audience before the end of the year. 'Planeshift' receives highest scores from reviewers - 100% from Aardschok, The Netherlands, 6/6 from Scream Magazine, Norway, 5/5 from DarkCity, Russia… By 2001 over 7000 copies are sold all over the world. By the beginning of 2001 the recording of the new album named 'Jabberworks' is finished at the 'Signal Studio' in the band's hometown Obninsk. It is to once again be released by 'code666' in the West and by 'Irond' domestically. It is mixed at the 'CDM Studio' in Moscow and mastered & edited by 'Massive Arts Studio', Milano, Italy. The working title of the album used to be 'Of Lands Afar' - it consists of the tracks composed from 1996 to 2000 that were completely re-aranged and professionally recorded with 'Russian Grotesque Live Orchestra' from Moscow. The album is released in July of 2001. The band's contract with 'code666' is running out, but is about to be renewed. 2002 - Rakoth are signing a contract with 'Elitist Records' - a new subdivision of 'Earache Records'. 19 of May, 2003 'Elitist Records' and 'Soyus Music' release the band's new LP 'Tiny Deaths'. Soon after that the contract of Rakoth and 'Elitist Records' is terminated. The band is on hiatus until 2005. In the winter of 2005 Rustam, Dy and P.Noir decide to form a new line-up of the band joined by Andreas (drums) and Kjord M (bass). The next few months are spent searching for a second guitarist. Four candidates are auditioned during this time. 24 of March, 2006 - Rakoth are participating in the «Резонанс» rock-fest, at the «Метка» club in Moscow with A. Mashenko playing second guitar on some songs. This is the band's first live show since 1997. April 2006 - Zafod B. is joining the band as the second guitarist finally forming the new line-up. Until January of 2007 Rakoth are relatively active at playing live shows in attempts to measure whether or not their material is still well-accepted and trying to find their place in the new live show scene. In February of 2007 the band is seizing their live activity and is beginning to rehearse a new album. Two and a half years later, on the 4th of September 2008 Zafod B. is leaving Rakoth for his solo career. The band proceeds to work on the new album. 'Ars Compilata' was destined to see the light of day only six years later - a whole eleven years after its predecessor, in 2014. The band has not released any new material ever since, but appears to be active/on hiatus. | |
