"Formel 1 has been founded in the former German Democratic Republic. The band has been one of the most popular metal bands from East Germany in the '80s. Besides their own material they covered metal classics of well known bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.

The band split up in 1987, although there was a short-lived reunion in 1999/2000.

In a broadcast interview 2024 on Radio Blau (Leipzig) drummer Fincke and guitarist "Wolle" Densky said: "We never broke up". So they are on hold."
